How roulette actually works
Roulette isn't one of the games you can play here — our arcade runs to bingo, blackjack and dice — but it's the game people ask about most, so here's the honest mechanics of it, maths included.
37 pockets, one green outsider
A European wheel has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, half red and half black, plus a single green zero. That zero is the entire business model — every payout is calculated as if it didn't exist, and its existence is the house's margin.
The numbers aren't arranged in order around the rim. They're deliberately scattered so that neighbouring pockets mix high with low and red with black, which stops any section of the wheel being obviously "better" to aim at.
Inside bets: fewer numbers, longer odds
Inside bets go on the numbered grid itself. Their payouts follow one neat formula — a bet covering n numbers pays (36 − n) ÷ n to 1 — and their probability is always n out of 37:

Outside bets: shorter odds, bigger coverage
Outside bets sit around the grid's edge and cover whole categories. Red or black, odd or even, and high (19–36) or low (1–18) all pay even money, winning on 18 of the 37 pockets — a 48.6% chance, not the 50% the table's symmetry suggests. The green zero is the missing 1.4 points. Dozens (1–12, 13–24, 25–36) and columns each cover twelve numbers and pay 2 to 1, landing 12 times in 37, or about 32.4%.
Where the house edge lives
Take the straight-up bet. A fair payout on a 1-in-37 shot would be 36 to 1; the table pays 35. That one-unit shortfall works out to 1/37 of every stake — about 2.7% — and the same arithmetic applies to every bet on a single-zero wheel. American wheels add a second green pocket (00), which pushes the edge to 5.26% while paying exactly the same. Given a choice, the single zero is always the better wheel, though "better" still means "loses more slowly".
Two things follow from that. First, no betting system — doubling after losses, waiting for streaks, tracking "sleeping" numbers — changes the arithmetic, because every spin is independent and every bet on the layout carries the same edge. Second, over a long session the edge grinds in one direction only. That's not cynicism; it's just the formula above, applied repeatedly.
